CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Tillman’s imminent arrival hadn’t given us much time. We were positioned around Jorgen’s residence, a tired-looking structure composed of steel and several large hunks of concrete. We’d taken Daze’s advice, and the LiveBots were out of sight, but armed and on the lookout. Curtis had been locked back in his cell, and Knox and two other men from the tribe were waiting out in the open for the crafts to land.

I could tell Knox was nervous, but he was doing a good job of masking it.

Heading into battle when you’d never really fought before was intimidating. This tribe was remote, rumored to be the last outpost before seawater swallowed the land farther south. The tribe had been taken over by a smaller militia several years ago and had no reason to fight. That, and the scientists had made sure they had excellent perimeter protection. For his entire life, Knox had been insulated and safe here.

Thinking about how far Knox had come made me think of Gia.

She would’ve enjoyed this showdown immensely. Walt thought I was fearless, but Gia was born that way.

Props sounded in the distance.

Case, Bender, Lockland, and I were situated out of sight. Several bombs could be set off by a remote that Knox carried in his pocket. It was too much to hope that Tillman and all his men would converge at once, even though Curtis had told them that the first two crafts blowing up had been a mistake and that the tribe wouldn’t resist joining forces with his group.

Tillman hadn’t said anything one way or another, other than he was sending a few crafts in. He was taking it slow, which wasn’t surprising. By this time, he should be suspicious that the men who died on the hill hadn’t been in contact. If he was a good leader, he’d be extra cautious, just as Daze predicted he would be.

A few minutes later, the props were barely louder. “Those have to be the slowest crafts in humanity,” I complained.

“Two crafts are approaching at sixty kilometers per hour,” Maisie stated from her position a few meters away. She was crouched behind a small structure used for storage. I could see her clearly from my position behind a large chunk of debris left over from some sort of wall. “They’re scanning the area with radar.”

“They’re not going to find much,” I replied. “Remember, you don’t come out until you’re summoned.”

“I have retained that order,” Maisie said. I could see the light behind her irises flashing. “I detect two humans and two LiveBots, one of each in each craft.”

At least they weren’t bringing an army of LiveBots.

Two meant we’d be evenly matched. Well, actually not. The odds were tipped in our favor, since Maisie wasn’t a retail bot. She was the equivalent of a military specialist soldier trained for combat.

That probably equaled nine to ten retail bots—if not twenty.

The crafts finally arrived, setting down ten meters south of where Knox and the two men stood.

Four figures exited. I could tell by their movements which two were LiveBots.
